Case 122: Food processing company
tests PROTECRETE® on lactic acid damaged loading dock.
Client: Larsen Company
Treatment Date: July 1992
Outcome: The half spayed with PROTECRETE stops spalling deterioration completely. The silage loading area concrete was only two years old. Lactic acid had eaten
the concrete down to the large aggregate, to the point that you could kick it out with
your foot. Faced with another major replacement, Larsen Foods decided to test PROTECRETE
Concrete Preservative to see if ACTs claims that its product would stop spalling and
acidproof their concrete. It did! Further examination today reveals that the half that was
treated with PROTECRETE has had no further deterioration. The unsprayed half continues to
show the ravaging effects of acid and freeze-thaw damage.
PROTECRETE Concrete Densifier can penetrate up to four to six inches into new or old
concrete depending on the porosity. It reacts with the free alkali and free water to form
a calcium silicate hydrate gel: much like forming concrete within concrete. The newly
formed gel does not bond to the existing concrete and therefore allows it to breathe. In
addition, the water molecule is now in a stretched position that corresponds to ice. Water
turning from liquid to ice exerts 36,000 psi. The Midwest can have 35 of these freeze-thaw
cycles a year. If you can waterproof the concrete and prohibit this action, you can extend
the lifespan of concrete.
Larsen Foods also found out that PROTECRETE was USDA approved and environmentally safe.
It is nontoxic, non-hazardous, nonflammable and non-VOC. Even ice is easier to remove
because the filled pores and voids dont allow ice to form deep inside the concrete.
A permanent one-time application of PROTECRETE pays for itself!

Case 142: Illinois custom home builder
relies on PROTECRETE to dry out basements.
Client: Czar Builders, Inc.
Treatment Date: August 1993
Outcome: 10-foot deep basement over a high water table completely dried out.
Ron Czarnota, builder of million-dollar homes, originally recommended to
the owner of this 9,000 square foot masterpiece in Illinois, not to put in a basement.
When the owner insisted on a 10-foot deep basement that would be seated over a high water
table that was within two feet of the top of the slab, he knew he would have a lot of
water to deal with, in addition to way above average rainfall of 1993.
During construction, pumps were used to keep the sub-grade area drained as much as
possible. The 10-foot walls were 12 inches wide and the floor was 5 inches thick over a
6-inch sub-base of stone. Drains were installed inside and outside with three sump pumps.
Water continued to weep on the walls and floor. The water had wicked 5.5 feet up the
walls. Normally, sprayed-on PROTECRETE will dry concrete back to its original color in an
hour. This basement was completely dried up in a matter of days. The air quality was
improved immediately and in this case, Czar Builders, Inc. was able to start building out
the basement with a beautiful cedar closet before the owner moved in.
PROTECRETE will densify and enhance any concrete situation inside and out, new or
old. It simply goes back into the capillaries where the bleed water came out and reacts
with the free alkali and free water to form a calcium silicate hydrate gel; much like
forming concrete within concrete. The gel does not bond to the existing concrete and
allows it to breathe. Its now waterproofed, dustproofed and acidproofed!

Case 201: The City of Rockford is able to
extend the lifespan of their 5 million-gallon water storage tank.
Client: City of Rockford, Illinois
Treatment Date: April 1991
Outcome: No leakage from treated area since that application.
When the City of Rockford had a 5.0 million-gallon pre-stress concrete
water tank rupture at the equator line, they immediately began to search for a solution
for the remaining water tanks. The thirty-five year old water tower was built like the old
concrete silos with an 18" wall sloping to 12" at the top. It was poured in
sections and steel banded. These steel bands corroded and considerable calcium deposits
had collected on the sides over the years.
Structural Preservation Systems, Inc.s Lee Popovich analyzed the problem and
recommended sandblasting a 12 by 15-foot area and treating it with PROTECRETE Concrete
Preservative. Once the sandblasting was completed, the water leakage began to flow and
could be trapped on the surface wall.
PROTECRETE was applied with an airless paint sprayer. The product is hydrophilic and
was sprayed right over the wet surface. The following morning when the SPS crew returned,
the surface had dried completely. SPS approved the application and recommended the
procedure to the Rockford Water Department.
The treated area has been subject to a forty-foot head of hydrostatic pressure from the
day it was treated to the present. It has had no leakage since it was treated in 1991.

Case 202: The Maplebrook Pool Association no
longer has to paint their pool each year.
Client: Maplebrook Association Treatment Date:
April 1990
Outcome: Paint has not cracked, peeled or chalked in four seasons of use.
Every year, the Maplebrook Association was faced
with the same situation with their Pool #1 in Naperville, Illinois. Peeling paint began
clogging the filter system. They sandblasted the sides and bottom of the 35-year-old pool
every spring.
When we came to inspect the pool, the concrete was so
pitted it looked like you could breathe through it. In the spring of 1990, the pool was
treated with one application of PROTECRETE chemical densifier following the sandblasting.
Six months later, we found out the Association bought inexpensive house paint on sale to
paint the pool.
We are now going into the fourth season without even
one-inch of peeling paint. The paint does not seem to be chalking, which means there is no
capillary action or chemical reaction under the paint. Also, we see PROTECRETE has acted
as a primer as well as a subsurface waterproof barrier. This has resulted in considerable
savings in maintenance costs for the Association. Ed DLabal, Director, says,
"We had to paint this pool 23 times in 30 years until we used PROTECRETE. As well as
pools, PROTECRETE chemical densifier should be applied to: tunnels, parking garages,
curbs, walks, service stations, ramps, truck docks, floors, basements, concrete walls,
bridges, runways, water towers, warehouses, manufacturing and warehouse areas.
PROTECRETE is safe to the environment and adds years to
the useful lifespan of concrete. That means less headaches for you and you will lower the
cost of maintenance and stretch your budget.

Case 210: Critical completion deadlines
cause major contractor to discover PROTECRETE.
Client: Lorig Construction Company
Treatment Date: September 1993
Outcome: I-90 Kennedy Expressway deadlines met in time.
Wally Simpson knew that in order to meet critical IDOT
deadlines, he needed to find a solution to treat the bridges on the Interstate 90 Kennedy
Expressway into Chicago. If he waited for the normal curing time before applying bridge
seat sealers, he would definitely not meet the deadlines. When he chose Applied Concrete
Technologies, Inc.s PROTECRETE from the Approved Bridge Seat Sealer list from the
Illinois Department of Transportation, he got more than he expected.
Because PROTECRETE Concrete Densifier goes back into the
capillaries where the bleed water came out, he found a product that completely waterproofs
concrete. It reacts with the free alkali and free water to form a calcium silicate hydrate
gel: much like forming concrete within concrete. The newly formed gel does not bond to the
existing concrete and therefore allows it to breathe. In addition, the water molecule is
now in a stretched position that corresponds to ice. This virtually eliminates the
freeze-thaw problem that is the main destroyer of concrete. Wally also found out that
PROTECRETE has a #1 rating on the ASTM C672 Air Entrained Salt Scaling test.
Another Discovery was that this concrete preservative
could be applied on green concrete and hold the hydrates for a better cure. This reduces
or eliminates the shrink crackage and curling. He also found that PROTECRETE was not an
environmental concern to the atmosphere or to plant life. Its non-toxic,
non-hazardous, non-VOC and nonflammable. And best of all, it is a permanent one-time
application! |
